Why do 'almosts' always hurt so much?
You sit cross legged in a fancy restaurant
With the 6 friends who mean the most to you
The live music plays, the singer neither awfully good nor disasterously bad So you play long Joking about the high notes and low. You play along till a girl walks in.A group of 3,With her in the middle Her in the black dress,Her with the cute smile,And an appealing voice,That is if you heard it,Did you hear it,Her voice,Your beats,Did you?
So you sit
Staring inconspicuously at her
So she wouldn't notice
Or so she would
You laugh,
She does too
Who knew laughter was contagious,
She fiddles with her phone,
Perhaps waiting for a text,
Perhaps not,
You look at her again,
Wanting to be looked back at,
You smile,
She does too,
Or maybe she doesn't,
But let's say she did,
Would it have made a difference?
So you sit
Listening idly the neither-so-good
Nor-so-bad music,
About love, crushes,
About open windows and closed doors,
About anything but love,
So you get up
You with your lack lustre voice
And you speak up
Demanding to sing a song
That you would have to quit midway
Because you don't remember the lyrics to it
It's your final shot
Except that you don't get one
It's past 12 now
And the live music is getting closed
You look at the girl
She doesn't look back
You look at her and wonder
What difference would a song make.
The food's all served and done with
It's time for the billing
It's time to leave
Your friends insist on going back to the beach
You, not so much,
The girl in the black dress doesn't either,
But you wouldn't know for you never asked,
You wouldn't know which color she likes,
Blue, you hope,
But you wouldn't know for sure,
Your friends, they are leaving now,
So do you,
For what's another 'almost' in a life full of it,
For what difference would a girl make,
A girl in the black dress,
Sitting in the middle,
Who laughs like you wish you heard,
And smiles ever so often,
The girl you hope likes blue as much as you do,
The girl you wish you sang a song for,
But you say you won't remember her,And I want to believe you,
But why do 'almosts' always hurt so much,
Is it because you never tried,
Let's say you did,
Would it have made a difference?
